1/4/2023 0 Comments Squids will be squidsLike some of Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith's other picture books, it sends up the genre it imitates. Include a grasshopper who doesn't do his homework, a duck-billed platypus who brags, a frog who can't skateboard, a manipulative pigeon, an indiscreet little walrus, a cheeky piece of toast, a stuck-up Beef Snak Stik, a bossyīook of matches and, of course, a squid (who's a bit of a drip). ''Squids'' is a funny collection of warped fables, with morals like ''It takes one to know one,'' ''Don't ever listen to a talking bug'' and ''You should always tell the truth.īut if your mom is out having the hair taken off her lip, you might want to forget a few of the details.'' (The last raises questions you may want to leave unraised if you are a squeamish parent of a small child.) The characters I know because I read the book to a bunch of them, ranging in age from 4 to 12. ''Squids Will Be Squids'' does all of the above, minus the bunny. If your audience is older, say 7 and up, the bunny should not only talk, he should also work the words ''butt'' and ''doofus'' into the story and make reference In the neighborhood when everyone smiles. By PATRICIA MARXį you want to write a blockbuster for the preschool crowd, your book should feature a fluffy bunny who comes from a two-parent family and talks about how nice it is Novem'Don't Ever Listen to a Talking Bug'įrom Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith, fables that are meant more to amuse than to instruct.
